Two minds that never met: Frank H. knight on john M. keynes once again — A documentary note
2016
This note presents new archival evidence about Frank H. Knight’s views on John M. Keynes. The relevant material is composed of a series of lecture notes taken by Perham C. Nahl in Frank H. Knight’s course on Business Cycles at the University of California at Berkeley in the fall of 1936. It emerges from the notes that the methodological gap between Keynes and Knight was irreducible, which explains the harsh tone of Knight’s published review of The General Theory. Connected to this is Knight’s strenuous defense of the ‘postulates of classical political economy’ as criticized by Keynes in chapter 2 of his book, an argument that was better expounded in the classroom than in the review. However…
How to integrate dreaming into a general theory of consciousness—A critical review of existing positions and suggestions for future research
2011
In this paper, we address the different ways in which dream research can contribute to interdisciplinary consciousness research. As a second global state of consciousness aside from wakefulness, dreaming is an important contrast condition for theories of waking consciousness. However, programmatic suggestions for integrating dreaming into broader theories of consciousness, for instance by regarding dreams as a model system of standard or pathological wake states, have not yielded straightforward results. We review existing proposals for using dreaming as a model system, taking into account concerns about the concept of modeling and the adequacy and practical feasibility of dreaming as a mod…

Die kinetik der allendimerisation, ein beitrag zum mechanismus
1971
Zusammenfassung The reaction kinetics of the dimerization of some polyhalogenated allenes with the general formula Cl2CCCCIX (X = Cl, Br, C6H5, COOEt) and of tetrabromoallene was studied by an IR spectrophotometric method. The reaction was found to be of strictly second order kinetics. The activation parameters were determined and the experimental data and the influence of the substituents were discussed in terms of the accepted general theory of allene cycloaddition. All data are in agreement with a non-concerted two-step electrocyclic addition mechanism. Within the experimental limits no paramagnetic species like a diradical could be detected by the ESR-method during the dimerization re…
On approximate-type systems generated by L-relations
2014
The aim of this work is to study approximate-type systems induced by L-relations in the framework of the general theory of M-approximate systems introduced in [42] and its generalizations. Special attention is payed to the structural properties of lattices of such systems and to the study of connections between categories of such systems and the corresponding categories of sets endowed with L-relations.
The New Consensus and Post-Keynesian Interest Rate Policy.
2007
Abstract This paper outlines the fundamental arguments of the New Consensus, critiques it from a Post-Keynesian perspective, and offers a Post-Keynesian alternative to the Taylor Rule. While Post-Keynesian economics provides a theory of endogenous money with exogenous interest rates, it has no clear description of a central bank reaction function. We attempt to remedy this oversight by identifying some of the difficulties attached to developing a Post-Keynesian reaction function, and suggesting an approach to the setting of interest rates that is more consistent than the Taylor Rule with Keynes's General Theory.
Is the Theory of Entrepreneurship Applicable to Franchising?
2010
This essay takes an entrepreneurship viewpoint toward franchising. The applicability of the general theory of entrepreneurship presented by Shane (“A general theory of entrepreneurship. The individual-opportunity nexus”. Edward Elgar, Cheltenham, 2003) is explored in the franchising context. Shane introduced a model of the entrepreneurial process in response to the failure of prior research to provide one. According to Shane, prior research has tended to look at only part of the entrepreneurial process, with the result that no general theory of entrepreneurship has been developed. Studies that consider franchising as a form of entrepreneurship are rare, as are studies on the entrepreneurial…
Vilpittömiä valeuutisia: tutkielma poliittisen satiirin sisältämän huumorin ja yhteiskuntakritiikin suhteesta
2016
(K)over-bar* mesons in dense matter
2010
We study the properties of (K) over bar* mesons in nuclear matter using a unitary approach in coupled channels within the framework of the local hidden gauge formalism and incorporating the (K) over bar pi decay channel in matter. The in-medium (K) over bar *N interaction accounts for Pauli blocking effects and incorporates the (K) over bar* self-energy in a self-consistent manner. We also obtain the (K) over bar* (off-shell) spectral function and analyze its behavior at finite density and momentum. At a normal nuclear matter density, the (K) over bar* meson feels a moderately attractive potential, while the (K) over bar* width becomes five times larger than in free space. We estimate the t…
